Military Cultural Competency Course

Name

Bridging the Gap Between Understanding and Connection

Every year, more Canadian veterans transition from military to civilian life. They all carry their own unique experiences, values, and challenges shaped by service. For many, that transition can be difficult. Mental health injuries, loss of purpose, and barriers to care often stand in the way of recovery and belonging.

This self-paced online training, developed by the VTN with funding from the Government of Canada, is designed to help professionals working with veterans to deepen their understanding of military culture and strengthen their ability to serve those who served.

Built on VTN’s 25+ years of research, development and service delivery, this course offers practical tools to help you meet veterans with compassion, respect, and confidence.

Whether you’re just starting out or have decades of experience, this training meets you where you are.

Why Cultural Competency Matters

Cultural competency isn’t theory. It’s how you show up. It means understanding the values, language, and experiences that shape a veteran’s world, and meeting them with empathy and skill. When you do, you help veterans find safety, trust, and hope.

Veterans Transition Network is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. Veterans Transition Network maintains responsibility for the program.

Developed by the Veterans Transition Network, Canada’s only charity dedicated exclusively to delivering culturally informed mental health and transition programs for veterans.

With contributions from Dr. Duncan Shields, Dr. Kevin Lutz, Dr. Matthew McDaniel, the VTN clinical team, First Responder Health, and the veterans whose courage shaped this course.

This project is funded by the Government of Canada.
